American Glam Sexy Cutsie Pitiful (oh yeah, and) Singing Idol

You know, I've watched this show from its inception. I get a kick out of it. I enjoy the actual talent that fills my living room with song, two and sometimes three nights per week. Early on in the competitions, I even like watching the non-talent. It's entertainment.

I do not believe anyone is being exploited. A person would have to live under a rock to audition for that show completely ignorant of all the possible consequences.

I like the judges and I think, for the most part, they are each doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing.

Simon is gruff - I'll give you that - but he's usually spot on with his judgements on the actual singing.
Randy is there to teach us new street slang every week and personally, I think he's doing a marvelous job of that.
Paula is the mediator/hand-holder who sometimes gets so bored with her purpose there that she forgets to show up completely straight and sober. Still, Paula is cute and is a personality we all wish we had in a friend. I like her.

I was never going to post about American Idol. Not because I'm ashamed that I watch it, but because it's all such a matter of personal opinion and preference. Then I realized, so is every other aspect of blogging - from our template styles to our post topics and frequency.

So let's take a quick look at all of the remaining contestants thus far in this season.

Gina Glocksen - This is the girl who would like very much to have many tattoos on her but is truly afraid she may lose her job or her family's respect so instead she went out and got a long sleeved tee shirt with fake tattoos imprinted on it for her audition. Now - I really like this girl. She'll never win in a million years, but I think she has a great little rasp to her voice and I think she could probably use a lucky break in life. It's just going to come from somewhere other than AI I'm afraid.

Lakisha - We all know by now that Lakisha is the whole package without the looks. She's a little dynamo - and I'm fairly certain that unless the voters get lazy and assume "oh she already gets plenty of votes" - she will be at least among the top three. I do, however, think she 'kicked back' this week and didn't give it her all. She'll fix it though - she's not going anywhere.

Melinda Doolittle - Odd. She's just an odd looking little creature, but goodness - she can sing! What surprises me is that a person whose chin rests on her chest can get so much air out of her lungs. Maybe it's because she lifts her shoulders so darned high. I'm sure there is some physical defect and I'm sure some people reading this might be a little put off by my descriptive. She's just plain odd to look at, but I very much like her singing abilities and am sure she too will rise to the top three.

Antonella - Everyone knows Antonella by now; someone very clever saw to that. Granted, she is a drop dead gorgeous girl and has great potential as a model of either the clothed or unclothed type - but my peeps ... man ... this broad cannot sing! Two thumbs down at this hotsy totsy Joisey gal. Not because of photos of her with no clothes but because of the singing from her with no voice. Christ - the girl can't stay in tune worth a damn and has no right to be up there ... she not only lacks vocal quality but also stage presence. It's clear how and why she has made it this far, but come on people - wake up already and be a little more fair to those who really deserve to stay in this singing contest.

Jordan - She's pleasant to look at, pleasant to listen to. For such a young lady (17 I think) I feel she handles herself very nicely before an audience and before the judges. I'm not sure how far she'll get because of the strong competition, but I wish her well.

Stephanie - She's definitely a talented girl. Immensely. She's also poised, yet not afraid to make friends with the entire stage while she's up there. No matter what ... she'll be a wonderful and successful performer. She has also chosen clothes that suit her well but don't distract. I can also see her in the top three or four ... easily.

Leslie Hunt - I put her in here even though she's not in the running anymore. To me, this was a crime. I thought Leslie had a wonderfully unique quality to her voice (too bad she didn't stay in her upper range more often) and had a sweet personality as well. She was one of those people who, when you look at her - the strong and powerful voice didn't match her small frame. I really liked her and I know, just like she knew, just like many of you knew, that there were far worse contenders in the line-up this week. Far worse. I'll miss this girl.

Haley - Sometimes there's someone you just can't bring yourself to like - she's one of those people (for me). I didn't like her from the start - didn't think she was really good enough to make it to the top 24 and I'd like very much for someone to tell her to stop being so smug because she AIN'T all that and she's already skating on thin ice.

Sabrina - This is the one I think everyone else really needs to watch out for. This girl has serious talent and an incredible amount of control over her voice. She too has a sweet disposition and an outstanding stage presence. Another tiny girl with a huge sound - wow.

A real quick rundown on the boyz (in my humble opinion) would be as follows:

My top four picks at this time - Phil, Blake, Jared, Chris

My least favorite four dudes in this order -

Sundance (just EW - everything about him)
Sanjaya (adorable and has a 'nice' voice but way too weak for the competition and doesn't belong there anymore. I really wanted him to do well and kick butt, but it just didn't happen)
Brandon (again, nice voice but maybe a smidgeon too cocky for my liking)
Chris Sligh (I have a bit of trouble getting past his "I'm just oh-so-funny and oh-so-clever" attitude - but he can sing well - can't take that away from him).

Honorable mention: AJ Tibaldo. No way did he deserve such an early boot. This kid had a lot of talent and I think there were two other singers this week who should have been gone long before him. One of them had much longer hair and a pretty smile and the other one really needs to either break out the Gillette or shut the top buttons on his shirt.

But like I said - it's all just a matter of opinion.

I haven't watched to much of it but I have give these people that audition for it credit for having the stones to go up there and give it a shot.
Espeicially those that can't sing worth a lick and still go out there some know ing they will get beated up.
What they thinking I don't know but a hearing exam for some would be recomennded.

That said there is alot of talent out there that is untapped and they deserve the opertunity to be heard and so do we.
It's just to bad that only one could win and a few get the exposure.

As for Simon, he's usually is spot on but man would I like to take his butt on the stage and knock the sarcastic piss out of him for how he slaughters some of those poor people and have the audience vote on that.

Have a nice weekend.

I haven't watched much of AI (or any to be accurate), but don't have a problem with the show. It does sound like a fun family show.

Sometimes I'll get into a season and sometimes I won't.

Unfortunately the popularity contest trumps the singing portion during some seasons and that just irritates me enough to quit watching.

I'm afraid this season will be more popularity than talent if antonella's weekly returns are anything to judge by.

I watch too, as much as possible, and your reviews of the people are excellent - and match my own. I am pulling for Melinda (strange or not, the woman brings tears to my eyes with her singing. It is that good).

A smart person indeed!

I wish we got the current season here - but we're still on last years! (They run it a year behind here so they can take their time on the subtitles, I guess?)

From your comment, I would say that you are pulling for the gals...AI has given a lot of deserving kids a shot at fame. It certainly has given them exsposure. Clay Aiken is an example. You don't have to win to get your chance..The Academy Awards, Grammys, Spirit Awards, same lady kept winning and she was an AI loser..But what a chance. I don't remember all the names, Stoddard, hasn't don much since his win but he had a chance he would not have gotten had it not been for AI. The recording industry has certainly taken note...so to all who have attempted it, I say fine...I love Cinderella stories...even if I don't know all their names

Carol, I know nothing of these programs other than some of the people on them tend to make fools of themselves, and as you say, sometimes there is real talent discovered as well. Me, I'm too busy working on my web site or watching Sci Fi programs or Hockey/basketball!! Happy weekend!

Yo, yo dawg. Yo, you know you really brought it this week. And it wasn't at all pitchy!!!

I give credit to Randy for making me so darn hip.

I couldn't take the early try-outs this year but I am enjoying the season at this point.

I haven't been watching AI this time around. But after reading your post, now I want to see it!

Oh, sweet! Someone else who watches AI.

I love LaKisha and Melinda's voices but no, I don't think either of them will win. I am fond of Gina and I am rather ticked off about Leslie going. I'm afraid I can't remember some of their names but I'll be watching it later this week. We record it and fast forward through the commercials and some of the songs. Both Keem and I hate ballads unless they are really, really good.

Didn't think AJ should have gone either. I was shocked that Sanjaya was over him. My favorites are Phil, Blake and Chris right now but that might change.

And I want to punch Paula right in her big, gushy, "I love everybody in the whole world and you really sucked but I won't tell you that because oh, I could get booed and I would hate that so instead I'll just tell you how pretty you are and how much I love you and you'll be a superstar someday" mouth. There. I've said it.

And I hate Ryan Seacrest as well. Annoying little fop. He doesn't have half the talent or the looks of Simon Cowell (or the really cute accent).

American Idol and Canadian Idol are two of my favourite TV shows. The sad part is that I work evening and often miss the broadcasts.. but I do catch it whenever I can.

Two years ago my daughter tried out for Canadian Idol. She did not make it past the first set of priliminary judges.. and I am not surprised :-).. but she had great fun both waiting and trying out.

Next year my granddaughter says she wants to go for it. She will be 17. I say.. why not! If I was younger (much younger) I would probably give it a whirl myself. :-)

funny... dave and i are right now watching last week's episodes since we were out of town and missed them even though we know what happens.

i agree with almost all of your comments, especially about sabrina sloan. i think she's great. i also agree that melinda is very "odd." i think she probably has the greatest voice out of this year's women, but i'm not sure that her looks and personality will allow her to win the competition.

My take on Doolittle: She reminds me of a young Gladys Knight. In looks, attitude... and voice. Her voice is by far the best of the competition, but it IS a popularity contest, not a real contest.

So although I want her to win, she probably won't. But she WILL have an amazing career, regardless.

Love your "take" on AI, Carol. Thanks for sharing. We have a weekly party on Tuesday nights at my place, if you ever want to show up.

And welcome back!

Melinda Doolittle looks like she could have been Lily Tomlin's photo negative.

But she sings so well, and I love her personality.

I like Sabrina, and Lakisha, as well.

Jordin won other competitions, and her father used to be an NFL player. She's not what I would consider the target of the show's concept - an unknown with no other realistic chance of getting discovered. She's a good singer, and I find her charming, but I can't bring myself to want to root for her.

I'm completely unimpressed with the guys this year.

I don't watch it but know enough to know that what you said about the judges is true. When it comes down to about 3 contestants everyone who doesn't live under a rock knows about it and I get a little involved then. I think it's great to give young people a start in the entertainment business.

I have to be careful reading US bloggers re:AI, because we get the show a few days after you folks so I hate knowing who gets booted before the show starts.

We used to have Simon host Pop Idol (the uk version) but it's not been on for a few years. They've gone with The X Factor, which I don't like as much.

Got to figure Simon spends a lot of time sitting behind that desk.

I think they should have an "idol" replication for brain surgeons or rocket scientists or parents...they are just as talented and scary.
